Learn to recognize when you've had a near miss. Anyone who has thought, "That was a close call!," has had one. Always report near misses as soon as possible. A near miss one time could be an injury incident the next time. Inform supervisors of unsafe acts or unsafe conditions immediately. Don't take shortcuts. Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response - HAZWOPER - Initial

Intended for site workers, operators, handlers, personnel at treatment/storage/disposal facilities, sub-contractors and others needing to comply with OSHA initial 40-hour training requirements. HAZWOPER provides knowledge and skills necessary to assist with remedial operations surrounding a hazardous materials incident and uses a combination of classroom presentation and "hands-on" field exercises. Course syllabus covers: hazardous materials recognition; basics of toxicology; employee medical surveillance; chemical hazards; respiratory and personal protection; monitoring equipment and procedures; regulatory compliance (OSHA, SARA, CERCLA, RCRA, DOT); confined space entry; operatinal zone determination; spill control engineering and decontamination. 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) Hazardous materials technicians are individuals who respond to releases or potential releases for the purpose of plugging, patching, or otherwise stopping the release of a hazardous substance. Technicians should have at least 24-hours of training equal to the first responder operations level and additional competency in the following areas: implementation of employer's emergency response plan; familiarity with the classification, identification, and verification of known and unknown materials using field survey instruments and equipment; ability to function within the assigned role in Incident Command System; knowledge of how to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment; understanding of hazard and risk assessment techniques; ability to perform advance control, containment, and/or confinement operations using available resources; understand and implement decontamination procedures; understand termination procedures; and knowledge of basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior. This course is in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and NFPA 472 requirements.

The course covers identification and recognition of hazardous materials, accepted first response actions; personal protective equipment, decontamination procedures, and on-scene management at a HazMat incident.

1910.120(q)(6)(iv) Hazardous materials specialists are individuals who responde with and provide support to the hazardous materials technicians. Their duties require a more directed or specific knowledge of the various substances they may be called upon to contain. The specialist should have at least 24 hours of training equal to the technician level and additional competency in the following areas: ability to implement the local emergency response plan; understanding of the classification, identification, and verification of known and unknown materials using advanced survey instruments and equipment; knowledge of state emergency response plan; ability to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment; understanding of in-depth hazard and risk techniques; ability to perform specialized control, containment, and/or confinement operations using available resources; ability to determine and implement decontamination procedures; ability to develop site safety and control plan; and an understand chemical, radiological, and toxicological terminology and behavior. (29 CFR 1910.178) OSHA revised requirements mandate a training program that bases the amount and type of training required on the operator's prior knowledge and skill, the types of forklifts utilized, the workplace hazards, and the operator's demonstrated abilities. Evaluation is required as part of the initial and refresher training, and at least once every three years.
